PHYSICS DATABANKS

1. Acceleration

  • What it is: Acceleration is the rate at which velocity changes over time. It's measured in meters per second squared (m/s²).
  • Types: Speeding up (positive), slowing down (deceleration), or turning/changing direction.
  • Zero Acceleration: Moving at a constant speed in a straight line means your acceleration is 0.
  • The Formula: (Final Velocity - Initial Velocity) ÷ Time.
  • Gravity: Causes falling objects to accelerate as they drop.

2. Motion Time Graphs

  • Distance-Time Graphs:
    • Flat horizontal line: The object is stopped (at rest).
    • Straight diagonal line: Constant/steady speed. Steeper = faster.
    • Curved line upward: The object is accelerating (speeding up).
    • Line going downward: Returning to the starting point.
    • Slope: Tells you the object's speed.
  • Velocity-Time Graphs:
    • Flat horizontal line: Moving at a constant speed.
    • Diagonal line upward: Constant positive acceleration.
    • Diagonal line downward: Deceleration (slowing down).
    • Slope: Tells you the object's acceleration.

3. Forces & Newton's Laws

  • Forces: A push or a pull, measured in Newtons (N).
  • Balanced Forces: Net force is exactly zero. The object stays perfectly still OR keeps moving at a constant speed.
  • Unbalanced Forces: Net force is NOT zero. This causes an object to change its motion (accelerate).
  • Friction: A force that always acts in the opposite direction of motion.
  • Newton's 1st Law (Inertia): An object resists changes in motion. It stays at rest or keeps moving unless an unbalanced force acts on it.
  • Newton's 2nd Law: Force equals Mass times Acceleration (F = ma).
  • Newton's 3rd Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction force.

4. Experimental Design

  • Independent Variable: The ONE thing the scientist purposefully changes or manipulates to test.
  • Dependent Variable: The "result" that is measured, observed, or recorded.
  • Constants: Factors kept exactly the same throughout the experiment to ensure a fair test.
  • Control Group: The normal/untreated group used for comparison.
  • Hypothesis: An "If/Then" statement. "If" describes the independent variable, and "Then" describes the dependent variable.
